00:00:00
Only about twenty five to thirty percent of autoimmune risk is genetic.

00:00:04
The rest is very much environmental and lifestyle exposure.

00:00:08
So your genes may load the gun, but your environment is what pulls the trigger.

Welcome back to another episode of Health Decoded.

00:01:56
I am your host, Doctor.

00:01:57
Alfred Lessie, and I'm thanking you for joining us today.

00:02:01
Very excited to talk about what we are discussing today, which is really the

00:02:07
autoimmune explosion, we call it in this country, and why your body is attacking itself,

00:02:13
why this has been so rampant as of late, and ultimately, how to stop the fire that's burning

00:02:19
inside.

00:02:20
So again, thank you so much for joining us.

00:02:23
We always appreciate our listeners and we want to just deliver as much valuable knowledge and

00:02:29
information as we can to help as many people as possible.

00:02:32
This podcast is free.

00:02:34
We do not take a dollar or anything like that.

00:02:36
We just ask that you share if you've been finding value in this show.

00:02:40
That being said, let's get started.

00:02:42
So why is it that your body is suddenly turning against itself from things like Hashimoto's to

00:02:49
lupus, rheumatoid arthritis?

00:02:52
Autoimmune disease is exploding.

00:02:55
In this episode, we are going to break down what's really happening under the surface, why

00:03:00
standard treatments often miss the mark, and how to take back control of your immune system

00:03:05
and your life.

00:03:07
So before we get into any of that, we need to discuss what is autoimmunity and why is it on

00:03:14
the rise?

00:03:15
So, autoimmunity is not your body betraying you, it's your immune system getting confused.

00:03:21
Instead of defending you, it misfires and starts attacking your own tissues, mistaking

00:03:27
them for foreign invaders.

00:03:29
So, basically within the science, it shows that your immune system is supposed to be a smart

00:03:34
defense system.

00:03:35
It has really two critical jobs.

00:03:38
Number one is to defend against invaders like bacteria, viruses, and toxins.

00:03:42
And number two, to tolerate your own cells and tissues.

00:03:47
This second job, immune tolerance, is where things go wrong in an autoimmune condition.

00:03:52
So, your body loses this tolerance, it begins to see normal tissues like your thyroid, your

00:03:58
joints, skin or even your brain as threats.

00:04:02
This triggers a chronic inflammatory cascade leading to tissue damage and a cascade of

00:04:08
symptoms that can affect virtually every system in the body.

00:04:12
There are over 80 distinct autoimmune diseases that have been identified, including some of

00:04:17
the most common that we see, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, celiac

00:04:25
disease, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, type one diabetes, and ulcerative colitis and

00:04:32
Crohn's disease.

00:04:34
Collectively, these conditions affect more than fifty million Americans and the numbers are

00:04:39
rapidly climbing.

00:04:41
So why this explosion?

00:04:43
Why does this once rare condition now become such a norm and what has changed?

00:04:50
Here's really what's been driving that rise.

00:04:53
Things like leaky gut or intestinal permeability, something we discussed in a

00:04:58
podcast previously.

00:05:00
Your gut is supposed to act like a selective barrier, but when it gets leaky, undigested

00:05:06
food particles and bacteria and toxins can slip through into the bloodstream.

00:05:11
This then triggers an immune response.

00:05:14
And for genetically predisposed individuals, that response can then spiral into

00:05:18
autoimmunity.

00:05:20
Things like environmental toxins.

00:05:22
We're exposed to more toxins than ever before.

00:05:25
Mold, heavy metals, things like mercury, pesticides like glyphosate, and industrial

00:05:31
chemicals.

00:05:32
These compounds can disrupt immune regulation and trigger immune misfiring.

00:05:38
Chronic infections, viruses like Epstein Barr virus or stealth pathogens like Lyme disease.

00:05:45
These can hijack immune function and create long term immune confusion.

00:05:50
In some cases, molecular mimicry occurs, where the body mistakes its own tissues for a virus

00:05:56
and begins attacking them.

00:05:58
This is actually a built in mechanism for those viruses to survive.

00:06:03
Things like poor diet and chronic stress, ultra processed foods in the modern Western lifestyle

00:06:09
is an autoimmune trigger factory.

00:06:12
Refined sugars and seed oils, artificial additives, stress hormones all impair your gut

00:06:18
health, increasing inflammation and overloading your immune capacity.

00:06:23
Genetics also play a role, but they're only part of the story.

00:06:27
Only about twenty five to thirty percent of autoimmune risk is genetic.

00:06:31
The rest is very much environmental and lifestyle exposure.

00:06:35
So, your genes may load the gun, but your environment is what pulls the trigger.

00:06:39
Now, I think there is some silver lining to that basically saying that we can take control

00:06:44
of our environment and our lifestyle to fight against these kinds of things.

00:06:49
There was a study in The Lancet 2021 that basically said the incidence of autoimmune

00:06:55
disease has increased significantly over the past thirty years, largely due to environmental

00:07:01
and lifestyle changes.

00:07:03
So, the key takeaway here is that autoimmunity, it's not random.

00:07:07
It's not just bad luck, bad genes.

00:07:09
Oh, I got this from my parents.

00:07:11
It's a breakdown in communication between your immune system, your gut, and your environment.

00:07:17
If we can remove the confusion, we can restore balance, and that's where the real healing

00:07:22
begins.

00:07:24
So, now let's talk about what are some early warning signs, what we call the silent storm

00:07:29
before the diagnosis.

00:07:31
There's a very amazing concept by a doctor named Doctor.

00:07:34
Steven Cabral who I actually studied under that he patented called the rain barrel effect.

00:07:40
Essentially, people used to use rain barrels to collect the rainwater and then use that water

00:07:45
to then water their crops, their plants, whatever they used it for.

00:07:50
Now, the concept here is that everything that affects your body is like filling up that rain

00:07:56
barrel.

00:07:57
Exposure to toxins, the rain barrel fills up.

00:07:59
Ultra processed food consumption, the rain barrel fills up.

00:08:02
Chronic stress, all these things start to build that up.

00:08:05
It's not until that rain barrel overflows or tips over that we call disease state, right?

00:08:11
So, we're constantly building this progression until one day disease has set in.

00:08:16
But that process started a long time ago.

00:08:19
So the concept is that these autoimmune diseases, they don't just show up.

00:08:23
They brew quietly for years.

00:08:26
Most people will experience vague, kind of frustrating symptoms long before they ever get

00:08:30
a diagnosis.

00:08:31
That's why recognizing early warning signs is critical for prevention and early intervention.

00:08:38
Autoimmunity is really a slow burn process.

00:08:41
You don't just wake up one day with full blown lupus, Hashimoto's or RA.

00:08:46
Instead, your immune system begins to misfire little by little, sending you signals that

00:08:50
something's off.

00:08:52
But those signals often get dismissed or misdiagnosed as stress, aging, anxiety, or air

00:08:58
quotes, just normal.

00:09:00
But they're really these early warning signs.

00:09:03
So, of the common early warning signs, and these are really red flags that may seem

00:09:08
random, but together they form a pattern of immune dysfunction.

00:09:12
Things like chronic fatigue that doesn't improve with rest.

00:09:16
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating, joint pain or stiffness, especially in the morning,

00:09:23
digestive issues, bloating, IBS, constipation or sensitivity to gluten, skin flare ups like

00:09:31
eczema, hives, unexplained rashes, mood swings like anxiety or depression, cold hands and

00:09:38
feet, hair thinning, brittle nails, dry skin, irregular menstrual cycles or an increased PMS.

00:09:46
And then food and supplement sensitivity, suddenly reacting to things that you used to be

00:09:51
able to tolerate is a huge red flag.

00:09:54
These are not just annoying symptoms, they're your body waving a flag, hey, something deeper

00:09:58
is going on.

00:10:00
So, some conditions to know and then their sneaky presentations and how do we link these

00:10:06
together, right?

00:10:07
Now again, this is just a symptom check, not an actual diagnostic tool, but something to be

00:10:13
aware of to then, hey, do I need to take further intervention, run some type of

00:10:18
diagnostic lab work, stool test, whatever it may be.

00:10:22
So, with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, this is the most common autoimmune condition in women.

00:10:28
Early signs are going to look like fatigue and anxiety, weight gain that doesn't improve with

00:10:34
exercise and diet, hair loss, and constipation.

00:10:39
Often mistaken for hormone imbalance or just being tired.

00:10:43
Get that thrown around all the time.

00:10:46
Celiac disease, this is on the rise as well.

00:10:49
Gluten basically triggering an immune attack on the small intestine.

00:10:53
It may present at first with bloating, brain fog, nutrient deficiencies or even no gut

00:10:58
symptoms at all until it's full blown, you start to get these more elevated symptoms.

00:11:04
And it is often commonly missed or misdiagnosed as IBS.

00:11:08
Psoriasis.

00:11:09
This is an autoimmune driven overproduction of skin cells.

00:11:13
Basically, the early signs are the dry patches, often on the elbows, knees or scalp or pitting

00:11:19
of the nails.

00:11:20
And this can often flare with stress, illness or certain foods.

00:11:26
And then rheumatoid arthritis.

00:11:28
This is going to affect the joints, especially the hands, wrists and feet, the smaller joints.

00:11:33
Early signs are morning stiffness, swollen joints, fatigue, often brushed off as like, Oh,

00:11:39
I'm just getting older, or This is overuse.

00:11:43
So, it's very critical that we start to take intervention or take thought of what's going

00:11:47
on.

00:11:48
There was a study done in the journal Autoimmunity Review of 2019.

00:11:53
Autoimmune disease typically begins with nonspecific symptoms that often go unrecognized

00:11:59
for years before a diagnosis.

00:12:01
This means that by the time someone gets diagnosed, the immune system has likely been

00:12:05
dysregulated for five to ten years.

00:12:09
So, don't wait until your labs are bad enough to get help.

00:12:13
If you are experiencing a constellation of vague but chronic symptoms, it's time to dig

00:12:17
deeper.

00:12:18
Your body whispers before it screams, so start listening now, and you may be able to help stop

00:12:25
autoimmunity before it takes root.

00:12:28
Now, I want to discuss the type of testing and root cause detection that we call the don't

00:12:34
guess test approach.

00:12:36
Now, before we get into that, here's a quick word from one of our sponsors.

00:14:00
Now back to the episode.

00:14:03
Alright.

00:14:04
Welcome back.

00:14:05
Now let's get into it, testing and root cause detection.

00:14:08
The idea here is we don't guess, we test.

00:14:12
Because autoimmune disease is not a diagnosis you just stumble into.

00:14:15
It's a condition that you can detect much earlier with the right labs.

00:14:20
But most conventional tests are limited to diagnosing the disease once it's already

00:14:24
advanced.

00:14:26
If you truly want to heal, you need to go upstream and you need to look at the root

00:14:30
causes, especially in the gut, immune system, and your body's total toxic burden.

00:14:36
So, let's get into the labs that really matter.

00:14:38
Let's break it into two categories, diagnosis and root cause detection.

00:14:44
So, the conventional medicine approach is going to be these autoimmune panels, which are,

00:14:50
they're useful, they're good for diagnosing, but it's not going to give you the whole

00:14:54
picture.

00:14:56
One is called an ANA, an antinuclear antibody panel.

00:14:59
This screens for general autoimmunity, often the first step for lupus or connective tissue

00:15:05
disorders.

00:15:06
A positive result basically says something's off, but it's nonspecific.

00:15:11
TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies.

00:15:14
This is how we detect Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is the most common autoimmune condition.

00:15:20
These should be tested alongside TSH and free T3 and T4, not instead of them.

00:15:29
And so, oftentimes we'll get one or the other when we need the whole picture.

00:15:34
The next one is anti CCP and rheumatoid factor.

00:15:38
These are specific markers for rheumatoid arthritis.

00:15:41
Elevated levels are basically saying that your immune system is attacking your joints.

00:15:48
And then a celiac panel, which is a TTG IgA and a total IgA.

00:15:53
This screens for gluten triggered autoimmune reactions.

00:15:57
However, be aware, some people will test negative but still have a non celiac gluten

00:16:02
sensitivity driving inflammation.

00:16:05
That's where functional medicine comes in.

00:16:07
We use some tests that are not even known about in conventional medicine.

00:16:12
People don't even understand how to read these tests, but we're able to look more at root

00:16:17
cause factors.

00:16:19
So, this is where the real answers start to emerge because we can use things like a

00:16:23
comprehensive stool analysis to test for parasites, candida, bacterial overgrowth, and

00:16:30
leaky gut markers like zonulin, as well as inflammation and more.

00:16:35
Because gut dysbiosis is one of the biggest root drivers of autoimmune disease.

00:16:40
Go back to episode 16 and listen to that, and it will explain how this process works.

00:16:46
Food sensitivity testing.

00:16:48
Looking at the IgG and the IgA responses.

00:16:52
Basically, of your immune system and those IgG and IgA cell factors as like the policeman.

00:17:01
The IgG is more like your general police squad, the cops.

00:17:05
Right?

00:17:06
That they show up and they kind of handle the basic stuff.

00:17:08
And the IgA is like the SWAT team.

00:17:10
When the IgA is elevated, there is an issue.

00:17:12
Something big is going down.

00:17:14
And this is going to identify delayed immune responses to common foods.

00:17:18
So, it's important to note that food sensitivities are often a symptom of leaky gut,

00:17:23
but often cannot be the primary cause as well.

00:17:27
So, that's when we need to explore more things.

00:17:29
Mycotoxin and mold exposure testing.

00:17:31
Mold can trigger and worsen autoimmunity, especially in genetically susceptible

00:17:37
individuals.

00:17:38
It's very common in those with the unexplained fatigue, sinus, brain fog type of issues.

00:17:45
And then as well as heavy metal testing.

00:17:47
So, toxic metals are going to impair the immune regulation and promote autoimmunity.

00:17:53
This is especially relevant if you've had amalgam fillings or a past chemical exposure or

00:17:59
a history of chronic infections.

00:18:00
So a study out of the journal Frontiers in Immunology twenty twenty showed that increased

00:18:05
intestinal permeability plays a critical role in the development of autoimmune diseases.

00:18:11
This is something that was historically more of a fringe theory.

00:18:16
Just ten years ago, Western medicine didn't even recognize leaky gut.

00:18:20
Now, this is shown to have been proven as this is a real condition.

00:18:23
This is a real thing leading to autoimmune disease.

00:18:27
And so, what is the mindset shift we need to make here?

00:18:31
If your labs are normal and you still feel like garbage, you're not crazy, right?

00:18:36
How many times have I seen patients, I could count it, that they come in and they said, The

00:18:40
doctors told me I'm just, I'm crazy.

00:18:43
I'm fine.

00:18:44
No, you're probably just not looking in the right place.

00:18:47
Standard labs look for disease, functional testing looks for dysfunction.

00:18:52
And that's where you'll find the earliest clues.

00:18:54
So, what's the takeaway here is that autoimmune disease rarely begins in the blood.

00:18:59
It begins in the gut, the environment, and the immune system's interpretation of both.

00:19:05
So, you need to run the right tests and you'll see the real root causes unfold.

00:19:10
That is when healing becomes possible.

00:19:12
So now, how do we take what we just learned?

00:19:15
We get a diagnosis or we get an early detection and start to calm the fire and rebuild your

00:19:21
immune tolerance before the autoimmune sets in.

00:19:25
So, I always like to tell my patients, this is not a life sentence, an autoimmune condition.

00:19:30
It's a signal that your body is inflamed, overwhelmed, and confused.

00:19:34
The key now is to remove the triggers, heal the gut, and rebalance the immune system so your

00:19:40
body stops attacking itself.

00:19:43
You don't have to suppress your immune system with medication for the rest of your life.

00:19:47
You can retrain it to do its job properly again.

00:19:50
So, we implement what we consider the five part anti autoimmune strategy.

00:19:57
We are all about protocols, because protocols are a system that has been proven to work.

00:20:02
This is similar to what we discussed in a previous episode, episode 16, about our five

00:20:08
R's for balancing gut health.

00:20:10
This is similar to that.

00:20:11
So, step one is you need to remove the triggers.

00:20:15
You cannot put out a fire while pouring gasoline on it.

00:20:18
So, you need to eliminate inflammatory foods for thirty to ninety days, if not forever,

00:20:23
right?

00:20:24
Gluten, dairy, refined sugar, seed oils, soy, processed junk foods.

00:20:29
These realistically just have no place being ingested.

00:20:32
You need to get rid of chemical exposures to things like BPA, plastic, glyphosate laden

00:20:37
foods, toxic beauty products and artificial fragrances.

00:20:41
There's an app you can get called Think Dirty, where you can scan the barcode of any product

00:20:47
that you put on your body, any beauty products, hair, shampoos and it will tell you if that

00:20:53
thing is loaded with chemicals.

00:20:55
You need to treat gut infections like Candida, parasites, or SIBO, which can be found through

00:21:00
the stool testing.

00:21:02
And then cleaning up the environment.

00:21:04
Getting a water filter in your home, testing your home for mold, reducing the EMF load if

00:21:09
you're sensitive to that, turning off the Wi Fi at night.

00:21:13
All of these things are how we remove those triggers.

00:21:16
Step two, now we need to repair the gut barrier.

00:21:19
Healing the gut is going to calm the immune confusion.

00:21:22
So we use gut healing nutrients like L glutamine, zinc, collagen, slippery elm, and

00:21:29
aloe vera.

00:21:30
I'm not going to get deep into this because we just discussed this in episode 16, so you

00:21:34
should go back and listen to that.

00:21:36
Step three, we need to rebalance the immune system.

00:21:39
Now, you calm the overreaction, you start to rebuild tolerance.

00:21:43
Vitamin D is a powerful immune modulator.

00:21:47
The optimal blood range is somewhere between fifty to seventy nanograms per milliliter.

00:21:52
And most people are deficient.

00:21:54
It's very common for people to be deficient.

00:21:56
Oddly enough in Florida, we are very deficient in vitamin D because we overuse sunscreens and

00:22:02
protection, not allowing ourselves to get sunlight.

00:22:06
So, omega-3s from wild caught fish or high quality fish oil are going to cool

00:22:10
inflammation.

00:22:11
Probiotics and prebiotics will restore the healthy microbial balance.

00:22:15
The microbiome is where our immune system lives.

00:22:18
And then fasting, short fasting hours from twelve to sixteen hours can reduce the

00:22:22
inflammation, promote autophagy, and improve immune signaling.

00:22:27
Go listen to episode 17 where we got heavy into the fasting and the protocol associated.

00:22:33
Step number four, lower your stress burden.

00:22:36
Stress is basically the gas pedal on autoimmunity.

00:22:40
It's gonna activate the HPA axis, which is gonna increase cortisol dysregulation and thus

00:22:45
immune dysfunction.

00:22:47
Prioritize seven to nine hours of sleep.

00:22:49
Track it, protect it.

00:22:51
Make sure your sleep and wake times are the same.

00:22:54
That's how you restore that circadian rhythm.

00:22:58
Practice some type of daily stress reduction, whether it's prayer, meditation, breath work,

00:23:03
or nature therapy.

00:23:04
Get outside and move.

00:23:06
Gentle movement is greater than chronic cardio, right?

00:23:11
So, going and running and pounding, pounding until your body is just beaten is not going to

00:23:15
help you.

00:23:15
A gentle walk plus some strength training.

00:23:18
These things are going to benefit the immune system.

00:23:20
And then you can consider some adaptogens, things like ashwagandha, rhodiola, or holy

00:23:25
basil as tolerated.

00:23:26
These can improve your body's response to stress and that cascade of the negativity that

00:23:33
comes with chronic stress.

00:23:35
And then step five, this is the fun part.

00:23:37
We get to reintroduce foods cautiously.

00:23:40
Once inflammation is down, gut function improves, you can start reintroducing foods

00:23:45
that may be used to create sensitivity one at a time.

00:23:49
So, three to five days we'll start to build in some of these foods and see how the body

00:23:54
responds.

00:23:54
And oftentimes the person can heal from a food sensitivity.

00:23:59
You need to track how you feel, your energy, digestion, mood, skin.

00:24:04
Are there flare ups?

00:24:04
Are there relapses?

00:24:06
If a food causes a symptom, you pull it out again and then you can try again later.

00:24:11
It's not about restriction for life.

00:24:14
This is about listening to your body and finding your personal blueprint.

00:24:18
We're all different biologically and our biochemistry changes as well.

00:24:22
And so we can heal from certain food sensitivities, but some people are just

00:24:27
predisposed to certain things based on where they were born, the things they did as a child,

00:24:32
the food they were exposed to early on, that created certain patterns.

00:24:37
So, there's an awesome study out of the Journal of Immunological Research in 2021 that said

00:24:43
that restoring the gut barrier integrity and microbial balance can reestablish immune

00:24:48
tolerance and reduce autoimmune symptoms.

00:24:51
Everything begins in your gut.

00:24:54
So, final takeaway here, autoimmunity is not random.

00:24:58
It's not, Oh, I just got this thing.

00:25:00
I guess I'm stuck with this.

00:25:02
It's a survival mechanism that's gone haywire due to our toxic inflammatory world.

00:25:07
Your job is to give your immune system the clarity and support it needs to stop firing at

00:25:13
shadows.

00:25:15
And that starts with the gut.

00:25:16
That starts with the environment.

00:25:18
And that starts with your daily habits, not a lifetime of suppressive medication.

00:25:24
So, if autoimmune disease is the fire, it always starts with a spark.

00:25:29
Your job isn't just to treat the flames, it's to find and remove what's feeding them.
