00:00:00
And so if my wife's mood is less than optimal on any given day, then I am going to be

00:00:08
suffering because of it.

00:00:09
And so I'm I'm always just timid around her instead of being attractive masculine myself

00:00:17
and being like, okay.

00:00:18
Well, you're in a bad mood.

00:00:19
Oh, well.

00:00:19
It's not gonna ruin my day.

00:00:21
I still love you anyway.

00:00:22
And, man, when when a guy can learn how to maintain his frame even when his wife is up and

00:00:31
down, that's when he starts the process of rebuilding attraction with her.

We're without somebody, but we got a great guest on the podcast today.

00:01:15
I got Matt Hollick, author, podcaster, and coach.

00:01:19
He is an awesome, awesome guy.

00:01:22
We're gonna dig in today.

00:01:23
He wrote the book DNA of a Man.

00:01:25
You gotta go check that out.

00:01:27
He also is the podcast host of the Man Warrior King podcast, and he runs a coaching program

00:01:37
that is just helping guys thrive at the highest level possible, in their marriage and the way

00:01:42
they interpret and hear from the father on a daily basis.

00:01:45
So welcome, Matt.

00:01:46
Looking forward to getting in here.

00:01:48
Yeah.

00:01:48
Thanks, man.

00:01:49
I appreciate it.

00:01:50
Like, I love it that we're both Matts too, so we're just awesome.

00:01:54
I know you're a good guy already because of that.

00:01:56
But it's good to be here.

00:01:57
I appreciate the invitation and reaching out to me originally.

00:02:00
It's good, man.

00:02:02
A lot of mats in the world.

00:02:03
I actually don't know the data behind that, but there are quite a few mats.

00:02:06
There are.

00:02:06
Yeah.

00:02:06
I know.

00:02:09
So cool.

00:02:10
We wanna dig in a little bit further.

00:02:11
I am a massive, massive, book reader.

00:02:14
So I wanna dig into your book a little bit, DNA of a Man, and then your story too.

00:02:19
But, I'm assuming that's a culmination a little bit of what you you went through and then why

00:02:25
you decide to write the book.

00:02:26
But tell us a little bit about it.

00:02:27
Yeah.

00:02:28
Yeah.

00:02:28
You're right.

00:02:28
It is a culmination of of some pretty pretty rough years of life, and, I wrote it because it

00:02:39
was like I had to I didn't really have a choice, internally.

00:02:42
You know?

00:02:43
And, like, I I had gone through the stuff that I had gone through, and I had all always, like,

00:02:49
from the time I was young, I'd always wanted to do work with the Lord.

00:02:53
Like, I wanted to originally, I wanted to, like, do ministry stuff, and then it kinda

00:02:57
morphed.

00:02:57
But, like, I've always wanted to basically proclaim a message.

00:03:02
I've like, speaking, whatever it is, I wanted to do that.

00:03:05
And so once I when my life went through what it went through, first of all, I lost sight of

00:03:10
that.

00:03:10
I didn't think I'd ever be able to do anything worthwhile.

00:03:14
But once I made it through that, I was like, I could not find the help that I needed from a

00:03:22
from Christian sources.

00:03:23
I couldn't find it from books about marriage.

00:03:25
I couldn't find it from, you know, sermons about being a man or anything like that.

00:03:30
They never seem to scratch the itch that I had.

00:03:33
They never seem to go deep enough or or just they they always seem to miss something.

00:03:39
And so I was like, there has got to be other guys out there who need what I needed, but

00:03:45
can't find it also.

00:03:47
And so that's where the book came from.

00:03:49
I was like, this there's a massive hole in church world that is not getting filled, and

00:03:56
and people are not actually truly getting their marriages helped, getting their internal world

00:04:00
in order and all that.

00:04:02
So, yeah, this is where it came from, and it was I wouldn't wanna go back through what I

00:04:06
did, but but at this point, I'm glad I have something to show for it now.

00:04:11
Yeah.

00:04:12
That I mean, that's so true.

00:04:13
Right?

00:04:14
No one would ever wanna go back through it, but it's part of your test is your testimony.

00:04:18
Yeah.

00:04:19
And it's the refining of you and what way it's what makes your story so cool.

00:04:23
Yeah.

00:04:24
And everybody's story right?

00:04:26
But we very rarely take that time to reflect and then hardly anybody, right?

00:04:31
You're probably in the 1% of the 1% that decides, hey, I'm gonna write this thing out.

00:04:35
That might be true.

00:04:36
Yeah.

00:04:37
I heard from a pastor one time that the shortest pencil is longer than longest memory.

00:04:42
And isn't that so true when you when you decide to write things out and how that can be passed

00:04:48
on so Yeah.

00:04:49
Kudos to you man that's awesome.

00:04:51
Yeah.

00:04:51
So let's dive into it a little bit more.

00:04:54
You said something kind of pre show, that really hit home and resonated was this idea of

00:05:00
like head not the tail.

00:05:03
Right?

00:05:03
Mhmm.

00:05:03
And how we're, like, you know, and maybe today's society and we're losing that type of

00:05:09
that that alpha in a man Mhmm.

00:05:12
In a in in a godly context Mhmm.

00:05:14
Of being the head not the tail And then almost, like, elevating the wife where you're walking

00:05:20
on eggshells all the time.

00:05:21
Right?

00:05:22
And how that almost is unattractive to her.

00:05:25
Yeah.

00:05:26
So that dig into that a little bit more.

00:05:29
Yeah.

00:05:29
Yeah.

00:05:29
So I know that I and now I've come to learn I'm not the only one.

00:05:36
There's many men out there who who go through life as the tail and not the head.

00:05:41
And that that's referring to for anybody who's not familiar, it's referring to Deuteronomy

00:05:45
chapter 28 where god is listing out the blessings of obedience followed by the curses

00:05:50
of disobedience.

00:05:52
And he says, yeah.

00:05:53
If you are my people and you're following hard after me and your heart is mine, then then my

00:05:57
plan for you is that you would live as the head, which means I'm gonna be calling the

00:06:04
shots.

00:06:05
I'm gonna be looking around assessing the situation, deciding what will be and what won't

00:06:10
be happening, and not the tail, which is just getting wagged around.

00:06:14
And I have no say over my life.

00:06:16
I have no say over how good or bad it turns out.

00:06:19
I'm just a victim constantly.

00:06:21
And I would say that victim is huge descriptor for what I would live as.

00:06:27
And to to marry that with the eggshell thing, like, if a guy has this mentality that I am a

00:06:35
victim in my life, I'm a victim.

00:06:37
And Christians, this is a this is a rough thing for Christians because tend we tend to view God

00:06:44
in such a way where, like, he's controlling everything that happens because he's God.

00:06:48
So if there's something bad that's going on in my life, it might actually be his will.

00:06:54
Hopefully, his will for me is that it would be good and pleasant, but sometimes that's not his

00:06:59
will.

00:06:59
And so we have this understanding that god is controlling everything.

00:07:02
So, really, I'm a victim of god, and I'm a victim of whether he decides to bless me or

00:07:09
not.

00:07:10
And so then I'm a victim also of my own my own brokenness is my own weaknesses.

00:07:17
I can't overcome those things.

00:07:19
You show up in different realms of life and it's different social situations looking around

00:07:25
wondering what people think of you, and now I'm a victim of other people's opinions rather than

00:07:31
being on offense and be like, man, I'm here to be a blessing and those people are lucky to

00:07:35
have me here.

00:07:36
But then in your marriage, like, you become a victim of your wife walking on eggshells

00:07:42
because I I don't have the confidence and self worth to be okay on my own.

00:07:51
And so if my wife's mood is less than optimal on any given day, then I am going to be

00:07:59
suffering because of it.

00:08:00
And so I'm I'm always just timid around her instead of being attractive, masculine myself

00:08:08
and being like, okay.

00:08:09
Well, you're in a bad mood.

00:08:10
Oh, well.

00:08:11
It's not gonna ruin my day.

00:08:12
I still love you anyway.

00:08:13
And, man, when when a guy can learn how to maintain his frame even when his wife is up and

00:08:22
down, that's when he starts the process of rebuilding attraction with her.

00:08:27
And it's not always easy, but that it's like a requirement that so many of us don't get.

00:08:34
That's so good.

00:08:36
You know, this I went to a marriage retreat with my wife.

00:08:39
It was something that, like, was on my radar that I wanted to do.

00:08:42
I wanna invest in my marriage.

00:08:44
And there was this, concept that we that was rolled out of when in the Bible, when God

00:08:49
speaks that, that a man is ahead of the woman in today's world, right?

00:08:56
That we have this like very feminist mentality of no, I gotta be equal.

00:09:01
I gotta be, I gotta be majority or equal to, and in the biblical context, when you, like,

00:09:07
kind of reframe that and really understand the context of it, and as we're walking through it,

00:09:13
he was speaking purely in the physical tense of why the man needs to be the head.

00:09:19
It's because I have the the authority and the physical presence to purely control and

00:09:26
dominate my wife.

00:09:27
Mhmm.

00:09:28
And I if I wanted to, I could, but that's why we are with that's such a fragile subject

00:09:35
within the context in the biblical realm.

00:09:38
And if you're following the father is that I could I could physically destroy her.

00:09:43
I have the power to physically destroy her.

00:09:45
Most men do, but I can, I also have the power to elevate her?

00:09:53
Yeah.

00:09:54
And to make her feel worthy.

00:09:55
Yeah.

00:09:56
And that level of attractiveness is what you're talking about as far as whether or not she is

00:10:03
in the right mental state, emotional state, I need to vibe with that, but I need to be above

00:10:09
that and be able to elevate her, where she couldn't even, whereas like most men backed on,

00:10:16
it's that time of the month again.

00:10:19
She's going through something and pushing it off, but it's really being seeing it through

00:10:23
the lens of what you're talking about.

00:10:26
So I I you know, that was something that, that really hit with me just even a couple months

00:10:31
ago of how how we have the power to destroy, but then we also have the power to lift up.

00:10:39
Yeah.

00:10:39
That's a huge thing.

00:10:41
So, actually, that reminds me of a of a reel that my wife sent me with Jordan Peterson

00:10:47
talking about how, like, a good man needs to be a dangerous man.

00:10:50
And then because if he's not dangerous, then his goodness isn't actually a virtue.

00:10:56
It's just weakness.

00:10:57
Like, because he can't do anything mean to you anyway.

00:10:59
So, you know, there's no value in virtue if you have the ability to hurt somebody.

00:11:06
You know what I mean?

00:11:06
Like, so in order to in order for the good that you have to matter, yeah, you do have to have

00:11:14
that kind of strength and ability to do bad to somebody.

00:11:18
And so the the idea of headship and and that ability to yeah.

00:11:30
If I could if I wanted to hurt my wife, I could, but I'm not going to.

00:11:34
If I can if I can step into that awareness of myself, it's it changes the game because here's

00:11:43
the problem with a lot of Christian men is that they actually have a self perception that they

00:11:48
suck, that they are just sinners saved by grace, and that's it.

00:11:55
None they don't amount to much more.

00:11:56
Their righteousness is is only as good as filthy rags.

00:11:59
Like, I can't do anything of value.

00:12:01
I can't do anything worthwhile.

00:12:03
And so they they have this perception that there's nothing good in me or about me.

00:12:10
And some Christian men don't have that so much, but a lot do, especially the ones that have

00:12:16
been in church for years years years growing up with this thinking like, okay.

00:12:21
I can't take any glory for anything because nothing good.

00:12:26
I can do nothing good and all of that.

00:12:28
And so they have that about, like, that mindset in their theology.

00:12:33
And then when you go to get married, you realize there's gotta be something off here

00:12:40
because that whole theology and mindset is causing a horribly dysfunctional marriage.

00:12:47
And I end up looking towards my wife to be the validator of whether or not something actually

00:12:55
is good in me instead of from a place of already knowing that I'm strong, already

00:13:00
knowing that I'm worthy, already knowing that I have value, then I have emotional surplus to be

00:13:07
able to give to her, to pour out for her to sacrifice for.

00:13:11
And one of the one of the verses that just slammed me when I when I saw this for the first

00:13:18
time, it was so eye opening.

00:13:20
It's in John chapter 13.

00:13:23
And, you know, people often quote for marriage in the Bible.

00:13:26
They quote Ephesians 5, which talks about husbands love your wives the way Christ loved

00:13:30
the church and gave himself up for her.

00:13:32
And he, like, washes her with water by his word.

00:13:36
So that whole marriage passage really has some some, like, flavors of this place in John,

00:13:44
where in John chapter 13, it's where Jesus washes the disciples' feet.

00:13:49
And and a lot of times people use, you know, husbands washing their wife's feet, like,

00:13:56
somewhat metaphorically, sometimes it's even literal.

00:13:59
And, my wife would never stand for it if I actually literally did that as an act of

00:14:04
romance.

00:14:04
Just saying.

00:14:05
But she would be like, no.

00:14:07
This is super awkward and it's not sexy.

00:14:10
So let's just let's just keep it metaphorical.

00:14:14
But people use that a lot.

00:14:16
Like, husbands, you need to get low, serve your wife, wash your feet, stuff, stuff like that.

00:14:21
So in this chapter of John 13, there's there's a verse that says, Jesus knew that he had come

00:14:29
from the father and that he was returning back to the father, and he knew that all things had

00:14:36
been given into his hands.

00:14:38
And the next sentence says, so he got up from where he was seated, took off his outer cloak,

00:14:46
wrapped a towel around his waist, and began to wash his disciples' feet.

00:14:50
And I never saw this for most of my life.

00:14:53
It was just a few years ago I realized that I was like, why would he say that this is a cause

00:14:59
and effect?

00:15:00
That Jesus knew his identity, his worth, his value.

00:15:04
He knew how awesome he was basically.

00:15:08
And that's why he chose to get down and serve his bride, his disciples, and wash their feet.

00:15:16
And I think a lot of men have been trained or conditioned to try to serve, serve, serve,

00:15:24
sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice.

00:15:28
But they're doing it from a place of internal emptiness where I don't have any of my own

00:15:35
value.

00:15:36
So I'm washing feet without the precursor that Jesus had.

00:15:40
And then so when I do that, it becomes needy.

00:15:44
I'm actually if I'm not already filled up for myself, anything I do towards my wife is me

00:15:50
looking to get from her my own validation.

00:15:53
So what I think I'm doing to love her, it's actually selfish because I'm needing something

00:15:57
from her.

00:15:58
Mhmm.

00:15:58
So there's this big gaping hole in so many guys who are trying to love their wives well and who

00:16:05
just are missing it because of their own mental lack of well-being on the inside.

00:16:14
That's good.

00:16:15
There's a lot in that.

00:16:16
How did you transitioning just a little bit here, you know.

00:16:20
Yeah.

00:16:20
I love the idea, what you were saying, A Good Man is a Dangerous Man by Jordan Peterson.

00:16:26
And this idea of, like, building out the podcast and the coaching program, but man,

00:16:31
warrior Yeah.

00:16:32
King and diving into the warrior piece and the king piece of that all.

00:16:37
Yeah.

00:16:37
Yeah.

00:16:37
Yeah.

00:16:37
So as a warrior, you know, the scripture says in one of the Corinthians, it says that Jesus

00:16:47
leads us always in triumph.

00:16:50
It doesn't say some of the time.

00:16:53
And so as a warrior, obviously, we wake up on any given day, and we have any number of

00:17:03
enemies that could possibly step into our battlefield that day or that we faced

00:17:11
yesterday, and we know they're gonna be there again today.

00:17:15
And it's easy when you are lacking an awareness of the of the full of the full power of the

00:17:27
gospel.

00:17:27
It's easy to begin to settle for those enemies just being a part of life.

00:17:32
And maybe those are my health.

00:17:35
Maybe those are my marriage.

00:17:36
Maybe those are my money.

00:17:37
Maybe it's the state of my kids, and they're going off the track or whatever.

00:17:41
Maybe it's whatever it is.

00:17:43
That any of those enemies of life, we can tend to just begin to settle for them.

00:17:48
And that is so stinking unbiblical.

00:17:53
You look at you look at god taking his people into the promised land.

00:17:57
Their problems came when they didn't obey god by getting rid of all the enemies.

00:18:02
They made peace with their enemies, and we tend to do that on a daily basis in our life.

00:18:07
We're like, you know what?

00:18:08
This is just part of life.

00:18:09
Like, we were also talking about off the air of of, guys just saying, well, I'm just getting

00:18:14
older.

00:18:15
So my body is just breaking down, which I'm making peace with that enemy of decay instead

00:18:20
of being like, no.

00:18:21
I will settle for nothing that is not part of heaven.

00:18:25
Because Jesus said he told us that we were to pray like, god, your will be done on earth as

00:18:31
it is in heaven.

00:18:31
So let your kingdom come, and when it does, I want my life to look like it would if if heaven

00:18:37
were already here.

00:18:39
And but in order to get that, I have to be able to go to battle.

00:18:43
I have to be able to fight for it.

00:18:45
And so many of us have this thinking that, like I said earlier, like, whatever happens in my

00:18:51
life, it might it must just necessarily be god's will.

00:18:54
So I don't fight because I'm under this deception that God wants my life to have these

00:19:01
enemies taking up residence with me.

00:19:04
So I have to learn what it means to actually fight for the win.

00:19:10
And that requires all kinds of stuff, but but it really there's there's a couple of central

00:19:18
things that it requires.

00:19:19
One is that I stop I stop letting my expectations for my life be determined by

00:19:27
what's normal for people around me.

00:19:29
And I stopped letting my expectations be determined by how I feel.

00:19:33
And I have to anchor my mentality and my beliefs in what god actually says.

00:19:41
So for me and my journey when I was going through health craziness that probably could

00:19:48
have killed me, I had to intentionally not let my expectation for the future be shaped by the

00:19:57
excruciating pain that I woke up every morning with.

00:20:00
I had to be like, you know what?

00:20:02
God says that he heals all of my diseases.

00:20:05
He says that Jesus bore my sicknesses and carried my infirmities.

00:20:09
So I refuse to make peace with this disease.

00:20:13
You're an enemy.

00:20:14
I will never accept you.

00:20:16
And so it's like, it's this, I don't take no for an answer mentality.

00:20:22
And from there, we have to we have to basically adopt a vigilance.

00:20:28
The scripture says, be vigilant.

00:20:30
Act like men.

00:20:32
Always be watchful.

00:20:34
Because those thoughts, man, the thoughts that we think are will either make us or break us.

00:20:40
And so Warrior is 1st and foremost, I think he has to get his mindset right.

00:20:47
That's so good.

00:20:48
An imagery that I have of that is you and I'll never understand this about football.

00:20:55
And I know it it varies with, are you a football fan?

00:20:57
I am.

00:20:58
I'm not, like, massive, but I'm a niners fan.

00:21:00
So

00:21:01
Niners fan.

00:21:01
Yeah.

00:21:03
I'm not I'm not a massive football fan by any but this is the analogy that kinda came across

00:21:07
of, like, you know, when a, you know, a team's up and they might be close, in the whole game,

00:21:13
they've been operating with a in a defensive scheme that worked.

00:21:17
Right?

00:21:17
Yeah.

00:21:17
They might be throwing some blitzes outside on the lot.

00:21:20
You know, they might be but very rarely do they play zone defense and play way back.

00:21:25
But at the end of the game, they're playing not to lose the game instead of play to win the

00:21:29
game.

00:21:29
Yeah.

00:21:30
And so they'll play this prevent coverage and they'll get really far back and they'll be

00:21:34
like, ah, well maybe we might not lose this game.

00:21:37
We might just have it, right?

00:21:38
Yeah.

00:21:39
And, that's a life, right?

00:21:41
For a lot of people, it's like, we don't, we don't stay with the, you know, tricking them on

00:21:46
their feet of staying with the bliss bliss packages every once in a while or or playing

00:21:50
man to man.

00:21:51
Yeah.

00:21:51
Instead, we wanna give the zone, you know, coverage that's just, that's not like a balloon

00:21:57
that we're we're giving up 15, 20 yards.

00:22:00
Yeah.

00:22:00
And that that is so much like that in life is that, oh, we're playing not to lose the game

00:22:07
now.

00:22:07
So, like, what does that look like?

00:22:09
Totally.

00:22:09
I

00:22:10
That's such a great analogy, man.

00:22:14
I I always, like, go back to, like, you play to win the game.

00:22:18
Right?

00:22:18
Yeah.

00:22:18
Like, let's play in your idea of, like, you play to win.

00:22:21
Right?

00:22:21
I'm not I'm not playing to lose.

00:22:23
Yeah.

00:22:23
And I'm not playing to even almost potentially not lose.

00:22:27
I'm playing to win.

00:22:28
Right.

00:22:29
And how are we winning in that capacity and seeing it through the lens, that biblical lens

00:22:34
that you so eloquently just put it is just like that that's it.

00:22:38
Don't don't go to that zone coverage.

00:22:40
Yeah.

00:22:40
You know, Is it still continually blitz?

00:22:43
Still move forward, where, God's calling you and he has an intents and purposes in your

00:22:49
life.

00:22:49
Totally.

00:22:50
It's so good.

00:22:51
So many so good for so many men to hear and and listen to that.

00:22:56
Where, where now can, you know, where do you wanna direct people from here?

00:23:01
Tell us a little bit, before we kinda sign off here about your coaching program Yeah.

00:23:06
To even a little bit about your podcast and where you expect that to go, in the near

00:23:10
future.

00:23:11
Yeah.

00:23:11
Just dive into that a little bit.

00:23:13
Yeah.

00:23:13
Thanks, man.

00:23:14
So, you know, everything kinda started with the book, The DNA of a Man.

00:23:18
So if anybody wants to get started with me, I would recommend starting there by grabbing the

00:23:26
book.

00:23:27
The I think it's up to almost, like, 10 copies sold now, and, I've had so many emails

00:23:35
or comments on Facebook or whatever from guys that are like, man, this book changed my life.

00:23:39
And I didn't expect it, but but that's how it's been.

00:23:43
So, that's where I would start, and you can you can find it at man warrior king.com/dna.

00:23:50
It's also on Amazon as well.

00:23:54
So that that book is gonna it's actually the first of a 3 part series.

00:23:58
I'm gonna I'm gonna be writing the DNA of a warrior and also the DNA of a king too.

00:24:04
But I would start with that.

00:24:06
On my website man warrior king.com, you'll find a lot of other things too.

00:24:10
You'll find coaching information.

00:24:12
I do 1 on 1 coaching with guys.

00:24:14
A lot of times they have read my book and they're like, okay, I really need more of this.

00:24:18
So I need to get in touch with Matt.

00:24:19
And so we will we will go through a process of mindset renewal because Romans 12 says, you get

00:24:28
transformed by renewing your mind.

00:24:29
So we'll go through that process and begin to eradicate stupid lies that we're believing and

00:24:35
begin to see, okay.

00:24:36
I've got to think according to how god thinks.

00:24:39
And we go from that into tapping into your desires that maybe you've watered down over the

00:24:44
years.

00:24:45
You've ignored them, pushed them out, whatever.

00:24:47
We wanna awaken these different desires for what you wanna see happen in your life.

00:24:51
And then we go into reviving your marriage if you're a married guy, which most of the guys

00:24:56
who work with me are.

00:24:57
But even if not, like, there's other stuff we can do.

00:24:59
But for the most part, it's like, yeah, my marriage has been really, really painful, and I

00:25:04
need some kind of help.

00:25:05
I haven't found it in the church.

00:25:06
I haven't found it from Christian books or whatever.

00:25:09
So we end up going into all of that and help you learn how to rebuild attraction in your

00:25:13
marriage.

00:25:14
So I I do that with 1 on 1 with guys.

00:25:16
Every now and then, a few times a year, I offer a group intensive where I take a group of guys

00:25:21
through that process as well.

00:25:23
But there's other courses and things that I have on my website too.

00:25:27
And, yeah, like you said, the podcast is another good starting place too for me.

00:25:32
So, the book and the podcast is the Man Warrior King podcast.

00:25:36
I'm up to almost 90 episodes now, and I the plan for that in the future is to is to keep

00:25:43
building it.

00:25:44
I plan to start getting some sponsors going and stuff and to really get the word out there

00:25:49
about it.

00:25:50
It's I have yet, I have not yet focused on double purposing it for YouTube, but I'm gonna

00:25:57
be building a YouTube presence there and building that out.

00:25:59
So eventually, you'll be able to find, the full built out YouTube channel as well.

00:26:05
So, go in big places.

00:26:08
I love it, man.

00:26:09
And then what are your social handles?

00:26:11
Yeah.

00:26:12
It's, on Instagram.

00:26:13
It's just man warrior king.

00:26:15
On x, it's man warrior king 1.

00:26:18
And then that's really the the 2 biggest places.

00:26:21
I'm on Facebook as well.

00:26:22
You can find me on man warrior king too.

00:26:25
But the those are it.

00:26:26
So yeah.

00:26:29
