Welcome to Health Decoded, your number one source for real health information.
00:00:15
With your host, doctor Alessi and Matt Tack.
00:00:22
Health Decoded listeners, if you're dealing with bloating that just won't go away no matter
00:00:28
what you eat, no matter what you try.
00:00:31
I need you to hear this.
00:00:32
The bloating isn't the problem.
00:00:34
It's a signal.
00:00:36
Every external symptom you're experiencing, the discomfort, the fatigue, the frustration has a
00:00:42
root cause.
00:00:44
In my years of clinical practice, it almost always leads back to the gut.
00:00:49
Nothing else in your body can fully heal until that foundation is restored.
00:00:55
I built this framework from my own health journey.
00:00:58
I was that patient, frustrated, dismissed, searching for answers.
00:01:03
I took everything I learned, refined it through years of clinical testing, and have since
00:01:09
helped hundreds of patients achieve complete relief from their symptoms.
00:01:14
That became the total gut reset, a step by step protocol with one goal, reset your gut in six
00:01:22
months or less.
00:01:23
If you're ready to learn exactly what's causing your symptoms and eliminate them for good, I'm
00:01:29
hosting a free webinar where I walk you through the entire framework.

00:01:38
Welcome back to Health Decoded.
00:01:40
I'm your host, doctor Lessie.
00:01:42
Over the last two episodes of this mini series, we've covered why chronic dieting suppresses
00:01:48
your metabolism and why your gut and hormones might actually be working against your fat loss
00:01:53
even when your diet looks perfect on paper.
00:01:56
Today, we're going to finish this series with the piece that actually builds lasting results.
00:02:01
Understanding the problem is great, but it doesn't fix it without a solution.
00:02:05
You need something that actively works in your favor, day and night, whether you're exercising
00:02:10
or not.
00:02:11
That thing is muscle.
00:02:13
I'm going to make the case today that building muscle isn't a bodybuilding goal.
00:02:17
It's the single most powerful lever you have for sustainable fat loss and longevity.
00:02:22
And I'm gonna walk you through exactly how we approach this with our patients from protein
00:02:27
intake to thermogenics and what a real comprehensive program could look like.
00:02:32
This is Health Decoded.
00:02:34
I'm Doctor.
00:02:34
Alessi.
00:02:35
Let's get at it.
00:02:37
Here's a fact that changes how most people think about fat loss once they actually
00:02:41
understand it.
00:02:43
Muscle tissue is metabolically active even at rest.
00:02:47
Every pound of muscle that you carry burns more calories per day at rest than a pound of fat
00:02:53
tissue.
00:02:54
It's not a massive difference per pound, but multiply that across pounds of muscle gained
00:02:58
over months and years and you're talking about meaningfully higher metabolic rate.
00:03:03
One that works for you while you sleep, while you're at your desk, while you're doing
00:03:08
nothing.
00:03:09
This is why build muscle is a fundamentally different strategy than eat less.
00:03:14
Eating less fights your metabolism, as we covered in episode one.
00:03:18
Building muscle raises your metabolic ceiling.
00:03:21
It's anabolic, which means building.
00:03:23
And it's a process, and an anabolic process is the opposite of catabolic, which is breaking
00:03:28
down.
00:03:29
And that's the state of chronic restriction that puts your body into.
00:03:33
There's a second reason muscle matters that gets less attention.
00:03:38
Muscle is your primary site of glucose disposal.
00:03:42
When you eat carbohydrates, a large portion of that glucose gets shuttled into the muscle
00:03:46
tissue to be used or stored as glycogen.
00:03:50
More muscle mass means more storage capacity and better insulin sensitivity, which remember
00:03:57
from episode two is directly tied to your ability to lose fat rather than store it.
00:04:02
Someone with more muscle mass can actually handle carbohydrates more effectively than
00:04:06
someone with less, even at the same body weight.
00:04:10
And there's a longevity piece here too, which matters beyond just fat loss.
00:04:14
Muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging and metabolic resistance.
00:04:20
Sarcopenia, which is age related muscle loss, is associated with declining metabolic health,
00:04:26
increased frailty, and worse outcomes across nearly every chronic disease category we can
00:04:31
track.
00:04:32
Building muscle now isn't just about how you look or even your metabolic rate today.
00:04:36
It's protecting your metabolic health for decades to come.
00:04:40
So, here's the strategic shift I want you to make.
00:04:43
Stop thinking of exercise, particularly strength training, as something you do to burn
00:04:48
calories during the workout.
00:04:50
The workout itself burns relatively few calories compared to what a pound of muscle
00:04:54
does for you every single day compounded for the rest of your life.
00:04:59
Muscle is the asset.
00:05:00
The workout is just how you build it.
00:05:04
Building and maintaining muscle requires adequate protein.
00:05:07
I want to be direct.
00:05:08
Most people, especially people who've spent years dieting, are not eating nearly enough.
00:05:15
Protein does several things that matter directly for fat loss.
00:05:18
It has the highest thermic effect of food of any macronutrient, meaning your body burns more
00:05:24
calories digesting and processing protein than it does processing carbohydrates or fat.
00:05:29
It's also the most satiating macronutrient, which directly helps with hunger dysregulation
00:05:34
we talked about in episode one.
00:05:37
It's very difficult to overeat chicken breast.
00:05:39
Very easy to overeat a bag of chips.
00:05:42
And critically, protein provides the amino acids necessary for muscle protein synthesis.
00:05:47
Without adequate protein, you simply cannot build or even maintain muscle, regardless of
00:05:52
how well designed your training is.
00:05:54
This matters even more during fat loss phases because when you're in a calorie deficit, your
00:06:00
body is actually more likely to break down muscle tissue for energy if protein intake is
00:06:05
insufficient, which is exactly the outcome you do not want.
00:06:09
Adequate protein during a deficit signals your body to preferentially use fat stores for
00:06:14
energy and preserve that muscle instead.
00:06:17
This is also directly connected to reverse dieting, which we covered in episode one.
00:06:22
When we're rebuilding someone's metabolic rate, protein and carbohydrate increases are
00:06:27
prioritized specifically because protein supports the muscle building, metabolically
00:06:32
active tissue we're trying to build, not just adding calories indiscriminately.
00:06:37
So, let's talk about thermogenics now because this is an area with a lot of marketing and not
00:06:43
a lot of honest explanation.
00:06:45
Thermogenic compounds work by modestly increasing your metabolic rate or supporting
00:06:51
fat oxidation through various mechanisms.
00:06:54
Some affect the sympathetic nervous system, some support mitochondrial function directly.
00:06:59
Compounds in this category that have actually reasonable evidence behind them are things like
00:07:04
caffeine, green tea catechins and capsaicin from chili peppers, among a few others.
00:07:11
But here's the honest clinical take.
00:07:12
Thermogenics are modest support tool, not really a strategy.
00:07:16
They're not gonna overcome a suppressed metabolism from chronic dieting.
00:07:20
They're not going to fix a gut hormone signaling problem, and they're not a substitute
00:07:24
for building muscle.
00:07:25
Where they can help is as an additional lever layered on top of an actual foundation.
00:07:31
Adequate protein, resistance training, healthy gut and hormones, now these can be effective.
00:07:37
Not as a replacement for any of those, but as an addition.
00:07:41
The only reason I really bring this up is because it's the piece people want to reach for
00:07:45
first because it's the easiest and it's the thing people think matters without having
00:07:50
everything else in place.
00:07:52
And the marketing around it is just in your face twenty four seven.
00:07:56
So if somebody comes to me and they're primarily asking about fat burners, that's
00:07:59
usually a sign that we need to have a conversation about muscle and protein and
00:08:04
fundamental strategy.
00:08:07
Let me kind of like wrap some of this up with another patient story and because I think this
00:08:13
ties this whole mini series together.
00:08:15
So this patient, Denise, came to us in her mid forties after the pattern that we described in
00:08:22
episode one, which looks like years of dieting, metabolism that had now adapted downward, and
00:08:28
after episode two, she had some gut and hormone signaling issues alongside it.
00:08:34
We didn't start with just diet.
00:08:35
We started with reverse dieting to rebuild her metabolic rate.
00:08:39
We addressed her gut inflammation first and once her system had stabilized, we built a
00:08:45
resistance training program focused specifically on building muscle with her
00:08:49
protein intake set meaningfully higher than she'd ever eaten in her life.
00:08:54
Something that initially felt counterintuitive to her.
00:08:57
Over the following months, her body composition changed in a way that dieting alone had never
00:09:03
achieved for her.
00:09:04
She lost fat while her strength and muscle mass increased.
00:09:08
She didn't lose as much weight numbers on a scale as she had wanted, but her overall look
00:09:15
of her body, her skin was more tight to her frame.
00:09:19
She had more lean kind of peeled look.
00:09:22
Her resting metabolic rate, which we retested, had actually gone up.
00:09:26
Her energy was better.
00:09:28
And unlike every previous diet she'd done, this was something that she could actually sustain
00:09:32
because it wasn't restrictive.
00:09:34
It was actually rebuilding a system that was working for her, not against her.
00:09:39
And so, here's kind of an example of what a program could look like, right?
00:09:44
And what it means when I use the word program is that we're not just doing a bunch of random
00:09:49
things.
00:09:49
We're actually specifically phasing things out.
00:09:52
What is the first thing that needs to happen?
00:09:54
If anyone's ever rebuilt or redone a home and done some DIY projects, oftentimes you have to
00:10:02
tear things down first, build a stable solid foundation, and then rebuild around it.
00:10:07
And so, here's what I want you to take away from this entire series that I've done.
00:10:13
Sustainable fat loss isn't about finding the right diet, it's about understanding and
00:10:17
correcting the systems underneath.
00:10:20
Your metabolic rate, your gut, and your hormone signaling, as well as your muscle mass.
00:10:25
And building a plan around your actual physiology instead of just a generic template.
00:10:31
And that's exactly what we do and why we built our Ascend metabolic rebuild program the way
00:10:37
that we did.
00:10:38
It's not a meal plan and a workout PDF.
00:10:41
It actually starts with real data.
00:10:43
A DEXA scan, so we know your actual body composition, not just a bathroom scale number
00:10:48
that can't tell fat from muscle or water.
00:10:51
It includes comprehensive lab testing, looking at thyroid markers, hormone panels,
00:10:56
inflammatory and gut markers that we talked about, so we know what's actually happening
00:11:00
inside your body instead of guessing.
00:11:02
And then from there, we build personalized programming based on your specific data, not a
00:11:08
generic protocol.
00:11:09
And because we know information without follow through doesn't change outcomes, it includes
00:11:14
ongoing accountability coaching.
00:11:16
So this becomes something you actually sustain.
00:11:19
Not just something you understand intellectually for twenty five minutes and then
00:11:22
you forget it next week.
00:11:24
So if anything in this series, the metabolic adaptation, the gut hormone piece, or what we
00:11:29
just covered on muscle and protein sounds like you or your situation or someone you know, I'd
00:11:35
encourage you to book a discovery call with our team.
00:11:38
We'll talk about where you actually stand and whether the Ascend Metabolic Rebuild program is
00:11:43
the right fit for you.
00:11:44
There's no pressure in that call.
00:11:46
It's just a conversation, not a sales pitch.
00:11:48
But if you spent years doing everything you were told and not getting the results you
00:11:53
deserve, I think you'll find it actually worth having and very informative.
00:11:57
I want to thank you so much for listening the last few weeks on this series.
