00:00:00
The problem with, symptom focused care is that it's not patient focused.

00:00:04
The doctor is often not even focusing on the person in front of them.

00:00:08
They're looking at a panel of blood work.

00:00:10
They're looking at whatever paperwork they got, and and they're making a diagnosis, and they're

00:00:14
prescribing something before they even hear the whole story.

00:00:17
Welcome to Health Decode, your number one source for real health information with your

00:00:22
host, doctor Alessi and Matt Tack.

00:00:27
Alright.

00:00:28
Welcome back to episode 2 of the Health Decoded podcast.

00:00:33
I'm your host, doctor Alfred Alessi.

00:00:35
Mine is my co host, Matt Tack today.

00:00:37
I'm just running a solo show, and what we're gonna talk about today is what we like to call

00:00:43
the root cause revolution and why Band Aid fixes do not work in health care and in

00:00:49
optimally getting you better.

00:00:51
Right?

00:00:51
If we wanna focus on symptom based care, then band aid fixes are what we do.

00:00:57
If we want to talk about health, longevity, and ultimately getting people out of pain and out

00:01:01
of disease, they don't work.

00:01:03
And this is why we need to get to the root cause.

00:01:06
Now before we get into that, I just wanna thank you for joining us.

00:01:10
I wanna recap kind of what we talked about last week.

00:01:12
We talked about our mission and why we're doing this podcast, why we called it Health Decoded.

00:01:18
And the whole goal here is to sift through the nonsense, to sift through the noise that is so

00:01:25
prevalent in today's society.

00:01:27
There's a million people shouting things at you, telling you things, telling you this,

00:01:31
telling you that.

00:01:32
And we wanna just present facts.

00:01:34
We wanna present ideas that are based on science, based on antidote, and ultimately will

00:01:41
work for you.

00:01:42
That being said, everybody's biodiversity is different.

00:01:44
Everybody has different things that help them, different things that, will work for them long

00:01:50
term.

00:01:51
However, there are very structurally sound methods and protocols that are based on science

00:01:58
that can help people.

00:01:59
And so our whole goal here is to sift through that, provide you with high level content and

00:02:06
action items that you can take today to get closer to a state of health and well-being.

00:02:12
And so if you didn't hear our first episode, go back and listen to episode 1.

00:02:16
You'll meet myself and Matt, and you'll be able to hear about what we're doing and all the cool

00:02:21
things we have going on within our clinics and just on the show in general.

00:02:51
We also want to hear from you.

00:02:52
We want this to be a patient and, driven by you.

00:02:57
So a patient driven podcast where you tell us what you need.

00:03:01
You ask us questions.

00:03:02
You can send them to ask at Alessi f x health dot com, and we'll answer those questions live

00:03:09
on the show for you to hear.

00:03:12
Now why does root cause medicine matter?

00:03:15
And so let's get into the nuts and bolts here.

00:03:18
And the truth is that chronic conditions in this country are on the rise.

00:03:22
In fact, about 90% of health care costs are driven by chronic disease.

00:03:27
That is a staggering number and something that can be drastically reduced through preventative

00:03:33
medicine, through focusing on lifestyle, focusing on the things that are making us sick

00:03:39
and not just giving out medications willy nilly for something that can be treated or modified

00:03:45
through lifestyle intervention.

00:03:48
And so the concept of root cause medicine is really about the specifics.

00:03:54
And, you know, so the the the problem with, symptom symptom focused care is that it's not

00:04:01
patient focused.

00:04:02
The doctor is often not even focusing on the person in front of them.

00:04:06
They're looking at a panel of blood work.

00:04:08
They're looking at whatever paperwork they got, and they're making a diagnosis, and they're

00:04:13
prescribing something before they even hear the whole story.

00:04:15
They rarely ask what you're eating.

00:04:18
They rarely ask what you're doing for physical activity.

00:04:20
They rarely ask how much sleep you're getting.

00:04:23
They rarely ask how stressed are you?

00:04:26
What does your life look like?

00:04:27
Do you have 5 kids that are crazy toddlers at home and trying to balance 2 jobs and this and

00:04:33
that?

00:04:33
They don't ask that kind of stuff.

00:04:35
Now I'm not putting a blanket over every single conventional western medicine doctor because

00:04:40
there are some really good doctors.

00:04:42
I'm just saying that this is not the standard, and this is not what we're seeing.

00:04:47
And so the concept is that it is highly symptom focused and not patient focused.

00:04:53
And so with a stat, like, 90% of health care costs being driven by chronic disease, we need

00:04:58
to do better as a country and as a whole.

00:05:02
And so what is the band aid approach?

00:05:05
It's basically what I just said.

00:05:06
They focus on what are your symptoms and what can I prescribe a medication for?

00:05:10
So if you have headaches, what's the best medicine for that?

00:05:14
There's basically an algorithm that is taught to doctors that they can take your symptom,

00:05:20
plug it into a database, use some of the knowledge they have from school, and say, x y z

00:05:25
medicine will help you.

00:05:27
What they fail to realize is that there are side effects from these medications that then

00:05:31
cause other things.

00:05:32
And then what is the symptom for that?

00:05:35
And what is the medication for that?

00:05:36
And this is where people get stuck in the rabbit hole of western medicine because it's

00:05:41
not specific enough to a person.

00:05:43
Everybody is bio unique.

00:05:45
Everybody is bio individual is a better way to say it.

00:05:49
And focusing and taking the time with each patient is now a lost art.

00:05:55
And so it's very, very common that I see patients in my clinic who have been through the

00:06:00
western medicine rabbit hole.

00:06:02
They've been through the weeds of it all.

00:06:05
5, 6, 7 different doctors appointments just to come out with hardly any answers and zero

00:06:10
solutions or at least zero solutions for long term care.

00:06:15
It's basically short term things that doctors then are just saying, here, go ahead and take

00:06:19
this, and we'll see you in a few months to see if it works.

00:06:23
What we focus on in our clinics is getting to the root cause.

00:06:28
And so for the example of something like high blood pressure, high blood pressure is a

00:06:35
symptom or a sign of something else.

00:06:38
It is not the problem.

00:06:40
The high blood pressure is coming from something else.

00:06:43
Do you have chronic stress?

00:06:45
Do you have adrenal fatigue or insufficiency?

00:06:48
Are there things going on with the way that your body's fluid dynamics operate with inside?

00:06:54
Are you dehydrated?

00:06:56
Right?

00:06:56
Those are root causes that if addressed can reverse high blood pressure.

00:07:03
Things like chronic pain.

00:07:05
Chronic pain is often a diagnosis I hear.

00:07:07
Oh, the doc said I have chronic pain.

00:07:10
The doctor just gave you a diagnosis of what you told them.

00:07:14
You told him you were in pain for the last 5 years.

00:07:16
He said you have chronic pain.

00:07:18
That's not an answer, in my opinion.

00:07:20
That is him repeating back to you.

00:07:22
So chronic pain is a sign or a symptom.

00:07:26
Now how do we find out what is the root cause of that?

00:07:29
Is there high inflammation within the body?

00:07:32
Is there something like rheumatoid arthritis attacking the joints due to an autoimmune

00:07:37
condition?

00:07:38
Maybe caused by some type of gut dysbiosis or hyperintestinal permeability.

00:07:45
These are things that we call root cause problems.

00:07:49
If your gut is hyper permeable and it is letting an adjusted proteins into the

00:07:55
bloodstream, the body can confuse these for proteins that make up the joints or proteins

00:08:02
that make up your thyroid.

00:08:03
And the body can start to attack itself, and this is called autoimmunity.

00:08:08
The autoimmune condition is not the root cause.

00:08:11
Do you get what I'm saying?

00:08:12
I hope this is making sense.

00:08:15
And so some of the consequences that we we see when we ignore root causes and we focus on

00:08:21
symptoms is honestly to hit these hidden costs that the condition tends to get worse over

00:08:26
time.

00:08:28
People tend to get dependent on medications because the body is smart and the body starts

00:08:33
to realize, okay.

00:08:35
This works a little bit, but I need more now to get the same effect.

00:08:38
I need more now to get the same effect.

00:08:40
And so over time, we need to increase doses.

00:08:42
We need to try different medications.

00:08:44
We need to balance the side effects of one medication with another.

00:08:49
And all of this can lead to a reduced quality of life and longevity.

00:08:54
And so how does functional medicine take a different approach?

00:08:58
Well, exactly the way I just said.

00:09:00
We focus on identifying and addressing the root cause of these issues.

00:09:06
Now even something like inflammation, which is a buzzword thrown around, even inflammation is

00:09:12
not a root cause.

00:09:14
It can be a cause, but inflammation is being caused by something.

00:09:18
Right?

00:09:19
There is some type of dysfunction within the body that is causing chronic inflammation.

00:09:25
And we're gonna get to this in our next episode about decoding inflammation and what

00:09:29
inflammation is.

00:09:30
Really, inflammation is your body's response to something, an infection, an injury.

00:09:35
It's a good thing, and we should have it.

00:09:37
That's how we're alive.

00:09:38
That's how we've lasted this long as a society and as a as a race and a species.

00:09:44
However, chronic inflammation is not normal and is something that must be addressed.

00:09:50
And so what could be a root cause of something like chronic inflammation?

00:09:54
It could be toxicity, an overload of toxins in the body.

00:09:59
It could be a dysbiotic gut that we have too much bad bacteria, not enough good bacteria

00:10:06
causing an imbalance.

00:10:08
It could be something like spinal misalignment on nerves that is leading to dysfunction of the

00:10:14
nervous system and the communication between those nerves.

00:10:17
And so it's really important that we focus on the interconnectedness of our body.

00:10:23
How one issue can cascade into another because we're not just a heart connected to a liver,

00:10:29
connected to a gut, connected to a muscle system.

00:10:31
We are a whole person.

00:10:33
Right?

00:10:33
And so if you're looking at the whole person, you need to focus on the entire person

00:10:39
themself.

00:10:40
And that's what functional medicine does.

00:10:43
A really good example of this is a patient that I saw in my office, and she would be cool with

00:10:49
me telling this story, so I'm gonna tell it.

00:10:50
I won't use her name.

00:10:52
But she had been to multiple gastric doctors, gastrointestinal doctors, even

00:10:58
endocrinologists.

00:10:59
She was fed up.

00:11:00
She she wasn't getting any relief, any results, And they basically said, well, we think you

00:11:05
have high stomach acid.

00:11:06
Here's this.

00:11:07
And they gave her some proton pump inhibitors, which made her feel worse.

00:11:12
They said, oh, well, if you feel worse, that's just that's just how it is.

00:11:16
She came into my office, referred to me from a friend of mine who's a chiropractor because

00:11:22
we've helped tons of people with gut gut issues, these kind of problems.

00:11:27
It turned out she didn't have high stomach acid.

00:11:29
She had low stomach acid due to an imbalance of bacteria in her small intestine.

00:11:35
All it took was us to run a stool test to see what the balance of her bacteria looked like.

00:11:40
Very simple, noninvasive test.

00:11:42
Collect a sample of stool, send it to the lab, they give you the results.

00:11:46
Very specific test, actually.

00:11:48
However, none of the other doctors in the conventional medicine thought to do that

00:11:52
because it lies outside of the normal protocol that they have.

00:11:57
They are also very much run by the insurance company and what they can do.

00:12:00
And And so if the insurance company doesn't cover it, they don't do it.

00:12:04
And so I think that's a massive piece real quick to tangent is that when you wanna get

00:12:10
better, when you want to improve your health, heal disease, you need to be your own advocate.

00:12:18
And the insurance company is not gonna do it for you.

00:12:21
Even the doctors aren't gonna do it for you.

00:12:23
I cannot care more about your health than you do.

00:12:25
And so on our show and in our clinics, we are proponents of your health is your

00:12:30
responsibility.

00:12:31
We're here to guide you.

00:12:33
You're the hero in the journey.

00:12:35
We are the guide.

00:12:36
Right?

00:12:36
We give you the information.

00:12:38
We teach you what you can do.

00:12:39
Ultimately, you have to do it.

00:12:41
We can't go home and eat healthy for you.

00:12:43
We can't go home and exercise for you.

00:12:45
And so when you can start to make that shift in your life, you will see night and day change in

00:12:50
the way that you operate and in your health.

00:12:53
And so back to the story, we helped this patient to balance her gut, to remove and detox

00:12:59
the bad, to reinoculate with probiotics and healthy gut bacteria.

00:13:05
And then we taught her what foods to avoid and what foods to use.

00:13:09
And basically using food as medicine in this situation.

00:13:13
4 months later, she went through this entire protocol, symptom free.

00:13:17
She's back to eating things that she wasn't able to eat before, and she's doing amazing.

00:13:23
And she shouts from the rooftops to all her friends what we did for her because we took the

00:13:28
time to sit with her.

00:13:29
I spent an hour with her on her first visit.

00:13:32
Got to know her.

00:13:32
Got to know what was going on.

00:13:34
The frustrations in her story, and I really dug into it.

00:13:38
And so I highly recommend if you're frustrated, you find a doctor like that.

00:13:41
You find a doctor who's gonna get on the same page as you and be on your level.

00:13:46
And if you wanna reach out to us, please do.

00:13:48
This is what we love to do.

00:13:50
And we are not a clinic who wants to keep patients on long term.

00:13:54
We want to get you back to health, empower you to take your health into your own hands.

00:13:59
And then, like, the mother bird sets you free and let you ultimately determine your future.

00:14:06
And then if you need us again, we're here to help.

00:14:08
So please go to Alessi functional health dot com.

00:14:11
And if you need, please book a consultation.

00:14:13
Happy to get on the phone with you.

00:14:15
Happy to have you come in and just hear how we can best serve you.

00:14:19
And so, ultimately, we also need to start to radicalize a change in traditional health care.

00:14:28
Start thinking of things differently.

00:14:30
Not what can my insurance cover, but what is out there.

00:14:34
Because so many people are limited by what their insurance will cover for them that they

00:14:39
don't even think outside of the box, And they they hold themselves back from ultimately

00:14:46
getting to a state of health.

00:14:48
And so I wanna be here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way.

00:14:53
We can really make a shift together if we start to promote these kind of topics, talk about

00:14:59
this stuff, and ultimately educate.

00:15:03
And that's what we are here to do.

00:15:05
And so please go to Alessi functionalhealth.com.

00:15:09
Sign up for our newsletter.

00:15:11
We release a newsletter every week and often twice a week to keep you updated, keep you

00:15:16
informed, keep you in the loop on what we're doing here in the clinics.

00:15:21
And just in general on the podcast, please subscribe to the show.

00:15:24
If you found any value and stay tuned.

00:15:27
We are gonna be having some really cool guests coming on the show soon.

00:15:31
We're gonna be relaunching some older episodes that we've shot that had some really great

00:15:36
content to kind of reinoculate you with with what we talked about.

00:15:41
And we want to include you in this mission.

00:15:44
We want you to be an active participant in what we're doing.

00:15:47
So, please, I encourage you to send your questions to ask at Alesi fxhealth.com, and we

00:15:55
will answer them live on the show.

00:15:57
If you don't want us to shout out your name, that's fine.

00:15:59
We'll keep it anonymous, but you will be able to listen and hear your health questions

00:16:03
answered.

00:16:05
And so what can we do today?

00:16:07
Right?

00:16:07
We talk about action items and what we can do to make a step in the right direction.

00:16:13
Well, today, you can start thinking of yourself as a whole, and you can stop thinking of your

00:16:19
symptoms.

00:16:21
And what you can do is also take a step in the right direction by seeking guidance, seeking

00:16:26
help.

00:16:27
If you have something that's been plaguing you or holding you back, you've been to doctors,

00:16:33
you've been through the gamut of Google and searched and searched and haven't found any

00:16:38
answers.

00:16:40
Look into functional medicine.

00:16:41
Find a doctor that you align with.

00:16:43
Find a doctor who will listen to you.

00:16:46
And, ultimately, a doctor who's gonna give you the tools to make this change for yourself.

00:16:52
And so, again, if we can help, we would love to.

00:16:55
Lesseefunctionalhealth.com.

00:16:58
I want to also quickly talk about some of our partnerships.
